Journal of Mental Health and Substance Abuse invites proposals from experts in the fields of mental health, addiction, and substance abuse treatment to create special issues that focus on specific themes within the journal’s scope. These special issues aim to highlight innovative and impactful research, encouraging the publication of articles addressing high-priority topics in mental health care, addiction research, prevention strategies, and clinical approaches.
Proposal Preparation
Special issues are published monthly, and proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Each proposal should include the following details:
- Title of the Proposed Special Issue
- Purpose and Current Relevance: A brief description explaining the importance of the theme and how it contributes to advancing the field of mental health and substance abuse.
- List of Topics to Be Covered: A broad overview of the research areas or topics to be addressed in the special issue.
- List of Potential Contributors: A preliminary list of authors or experts expected to contribute articles.
- Guest Editor(s) and Reviewers: Names, affiliations, and contact information (address, phone, email) of the proposed guest editors and potential reviewers.
- Timeline for Submission and Review Process: A tentative schedule for article submission, review, revision, and final acceptance.

Role of Editorial Board Members
- Review submitted proposals to ensure alignment with current trends in mental health and substance abuse research.
- Recommend suitable proposals, along with proposed guest editors and their biographies.
- Upon acceptance, guest editors will be responsible for managing the review process and selection of articles for the special issue.
Role of Guest Editor(s)
- Provide an overview of the special issue’s theme and its relevance to the journal’s scope.
- Suggest potential authors and invite them to submit relevant articles for the special issue.
- Recommend 3-5 reviewers for each manuscript submitted to the special issue.
- Manage communications with authors and reviewers regarding manuscript guidelines and peer review requirements.
- Set a timeline for manuscript preparation, review, and final submission.
- Ensure the final submission of all edited articles and the corresponding author information.
- Include a short editorial on the special issue topic, authored by the guest editor or one of the contributors.
Submission Process
- Special issue articles may include original research, case reports, reviews, and mini-reviews relevant to the specified theme.
- All manuscripts will undergo peer review by the committee selected by the guest editor(s).
- Manuscripts must adhere to the journal’s style and formatting guidelines.
- Each special issue will include 5-10 articles.
- Manuscripts should be submitted via email, accompanied by a cover letter referencing the special issue theme.
- Accepted manuscripts submitted by the deadline will be published within the designated timeframe for the journal’s publication.
- All special issues will be published under open access, making them freely available to read, download, and print.
